Tablets

This week we learned about one particular type of hardware - interactive boards. Another type of hardware is tablets with the most popular being the iPad. Many educators are buzzing about iPads. Do you think that iPads will revolutionize education? Why or why not?

  1. I think Ipads will revolutionize education. Students will be able to take an active roll in every lesson rather than a typical lecture. I know that my high school history teacher had just gotten a grant to get ipads in the classroom 2 years ago, and he was so excited that the students would be able to have so many more resources at their fingertips. With the ipad, students will be able to research with the professor in class which enables them to have a better understanding of a subject rather than reading an old textbook or listening to a lecture. With the Ipad, students will aslo be able to download applications that will help them with their studding. There are many many free applications that help students with making flash cards, quizzing themselves on materials, or just giving information about a subject. With the ipad, students can save/bookmark their work and take notes right in the notepad so that they have one amazing resource/tool for every class in one small tablet, and then they will be able to go home and review all of the material they learned that day. Ipads and tablets are amazing and will definitely revolutionize education.

  2. I think that ipads will revolutionize education. Every student in the class will be able to participate and it will help students to be more engaged. A teacher can do a lesson and ask the students a question. The students can all answer on the iPads and the teacher will get an response immediately. This will help the teacher to know how the students are doing. IPads can also help students view education as a fun thing. It is so important for kids to want to learn and the use of ipads would encourage that.

  3. I think iPads will definitely revolutionize education. They are small enough to be handheld, and you only need one to pass around the classroom. Even if you only have one, a lot of people this day in age have iPads of their own and kids would be able to bring it in to class so there are even more to speed up the learning process. It's a great way to have a miniaturized smart board-like piece of technology where it is touch screen so kids will have more fun. Touch screen is more new and interesting than the old paper and pencil ways. When a lesson with a smart board or an iPad emerges, students are nothing less of eager to use them!

  4. I am personally i fan of the iPad and i think iPads will be the way of the future. at the that technology is changing the classroom i think its a matter of if the classrooms will have iPads it has now become a matter of when and who can afford it. i think at first it hurt the pocket a little but in the long run it will help out alot because now days lots of the text book have gone digital and are downloadable. so i think a download is cheaper than than having to change books every time something changes.

  5. Absolutely iPads will revolutionize education, there is so many things you can do on the iPads. Each student could get one and you can do all your computer activities without even leaving the class room. You wouldn't have to try to find an open computer lab you would not even have to leave the classroom. Also with using technology students are more interested and engaged then if you just have regular lessons, the students would be so excited to learn and use them.

  6. I think that ipads will be a new big way of learning. There are so many apps and features that will help learning. If every student were able to have one all computer related work could be done. It would also help because most schools have one or two computer rooms and they are full most times, so if ipads were avalible that wouldnt be a problem. Ipads also help because its a technology tool that students will be excited about.

  7. The use of ipads in the classroom will definitely revolutionize education. Integrating this new technology allows for the lesson to become more interactive, allowing the students to become more involved with the lesson topic. By moving away from the traditional lecture classroom, the use of these products allows the students more control over how they learn. It also reaches out to students of different learning styles, for those who learn best through doing and seeing, not just recording or hearing.

    1. Real revolution will come when different learning styles are addressed, I think.

  8. I do think that iPads will revolutionize education since I see some schools already starting to use them. The fact of the matter is anything personally interactive such as the iPad can not only help students visually and kinesthetically learn the lesson, but can also help keep the answers to themselves. Some students may be self-conscious about getting an answer wrong, therefore they won't have the embarrassment of the rest of the class knowing something that individual student didn't know. Since the iPad also has an undetermined number of applications ready to download at a moments notice, the possibilities for additional items usable such as calculators, ebooks, etc. will make it easier to learn not only in the classroom but on a personal level as well. I've never really liked Apple products as they tend to frustrate me and shutdown on me, so one suggestion I would make to Apple is to make the technology a bit more user friendly to average PC users such as myself.

  9. Even though I know absolutely nothing about IPads, I do believe it will revolutionize education. My peers made many great points about how the Ipad is very engaging for students and how there are so many apps to use for educational purposes which seems to be excellent for improving education. I also think tablets will be revolutionary because they are easily transportable. I am not sure if a teacher will even need to use a computer when they have a tablet especially if it can be connected with a smart board. This will make it easy for teachers to plan lessons at home. Also, if schools were more advanced and there were enough tablets for all students, lessons could be easily transportable as well. For example, when each student has a tablet, education could expand beyond the classroom environment. Class could take place outside, especially if they are doing a science lesson, class could also take place at home which is similar to the 'backwards classroom' term we learned in class earlier in the semester. The tablet would be a great way to expand the learning environment outside the classroom which will be more beneficial for students.

  10. I am ambivalent about how I feel about iPads revolutionaizing education. I think it is a great resource and a luxary to many people, let alone teachers who have them as a resource in their classroom. The benefits of having an ipad/tablet are that it is portable, user-friendly, familliar to many students, and accessibille to other educational tools (applications, internet, video, etc.) This is great when you want to expand on a lesson or reinforce a concept through a video and students. Schools in Newington, Ct are allowing students to bring their own smartphones and tablets into the classrooms and as result are finding that it has actually helped their students learn and become more educated. My hesitations fall into the category of a distraction and price. If classrooms only have one tablet available students may argue over it, use it as a reward and rush their work to get time to use it. Also, it would be unrealistic to believe that all students would have their own to use. As convienet as it would be, it is not likey. Also, because the ipad is capable of so many other things- whos to say that if each student was using one they wouldnt be playing a game or doing something off irrelevant to the lesson, It would be hard to monitor each students individual activity. It would be interesting to see if more software comes out specficially for educational purposes for the ipad. In the mean time, I could not see myself planning a lesson in its entirety on an ipad and I cant expect all classrooms or schools to have such new-age technology/resources availabe to teachers.

  11. I think that iPads will be revolutionary to education. They allow students and teachers to use online activities during class and allow students to be more hands-on in their learning. The resources that iPads had at the press of a button are infinite. If the whole class each had an iPad, the students would be able to use apps simultaniously and compare answers and results. I, however, do not think iPads are the best choice to use in the classroom. Students would be on different websites, apps, etc. when they are supposed to be listening to the teacher or collabortating with other students. I would rather use a Smartboard because it is just as inclusive, but it makes sure the students are paying attention insted of exploring the internet. If my school had the resources for a classroom full of iPads, I would use them in the classroom when I know my students will be able to handle them appropriately.

  12. Certainly technology options should be investigated carefully before bringing them into the class room, mostly for financial reasons. If students can bring their own technology (and enough do so) group work, and class projects can be improved with the use of a smart phone. As long as distractions are avoided, the use of an internet phone can be highly influential on the learning process. Children are already fluent with the technology and can probably educate their peers in it more efficiently than an adult teacher.

  14. In addition to interactive boards, other hardware devices, such as tablets, are gaining popularity in the education field. Despite that I view tablets, such as the iPad, as a productive technological element to incorporate into lesson plans; I do not believe that they will revolutionize education. This is not due to the resources and abilities tablets possess, but rather the lack of knowledge on the part of the educator to fully incorporate this technology into the classroom and the school district's inability to purchase an adequate number of tablets to make their use effective. During a previous semester's teaching experience, I was place in a Title I school that, due to federal funding, was able to purchase iPads that could cater to the needs of two classrooms at a time and SmartBoards for each classroom. However, despite the availability of this technology, the aging teaching population was not enthusiastic about incorporating these devices into their already existing lesson plans. Teachers that did use them used these resources for drills rather the creative methods for learning. Due to numerous experiences like this one, I have become unconvinced that technology will truly appear in the classroom setting until individuals of the E-generation enter the teaching field. However, there are exceptions to this as some schools do use tablets effectively. Featured on the front page of the Hartford Courant this week, St. Mary’s, a small private school in Simsbury, was able to purchase tablets for their entire student body. Their efforts included close contact with Apple officials, professional development sessions for parents and teachers, and an iPad blog to keep all involved individuals up-to-date. These actions have made their incorporation of tablets this year a success.

    1. Many good points. While you point out many positive effects of iPads - revolutionize is a strong word and I'm not certain a true revolution will occur.

  15. I do agree and think that I pads are going to be very common throughout classrooms in our future. This type of technology can not only make the lesson fun but children are physically being involved by using the touch screen. It gives children a sense of accomplishment as well. That they were involved with the activity at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think that the IPad will revolutionize education because students can take a more interactive role in their learning. This will allow students to physically participate and therefore be more engaged. When students take an active role in their learning they are usually more willing to sit and learn the material. Using an IPad will benefit both the students and the teacher and is overall a positive addition to any classroom.

  17. The main goal of incorporating technology into the classroom is to engage students in the lessons. Technology is an amazing way to engage students although not every lesson is set out to have technology included in it. Smart boards are a great addition to any classroom, children love to use technology and interact with the class in a exciting way. Ipads are an awesome addition to having a smart board in the classroom. Ipads are beneficial to the students and the teacher in many ways. For example, if the teacher has a large classroom and wants to engage all the students he/she could have ipads for each student and have them answer questions on them that get immeadiately sent to the screen or have individuals answer and move things on the screen instead of having to come up to the board. Besides being used as a controller Ipads are also like a mini computer, there are so many applications that can be useful for students on them. On an ipad the student can make graphs, webs, charts, lists, read books and even type or write paragraphs; all of the things they do on their ipad can be linked to the teachers computer. Ipads can substitute many material items and in the end be worth the cost, save money and time for the class and teacher. Ipads can revolutionize the classroom by engaging students even further in lessons, further than any other technology can.

    1. Many great thoughts. I would caution that the main goal of technology is for engagement. While it is one there are many others including readying students for the workforce that requires technology skills or technology that can explain or show students something better than the teacher can, etc.

  18. I think iPads are already revolutionizing education. My sister has been working as a teacher for the past two years and she always has her iPad on her to help her with her lessons and stuff like that. The iPad is handy because it is small enough to carry and pass around to students and it gets students a bit more involved when they are the ones holding it and touching it. Computers did wonders for the classroom when school systems started making computer labs for classes to go to and I think iPads and tablets are doing the same thing. If a teacher posts a PowerPoint online, the student can access it from their iPad and follow along while the teacher goes through it in front of the class. A lot of times this helps students and keeps them focused. It helps keep students engaged just like Smartboards do. iPads can help students that feel like they can't keep up with the teacher when they are presenting, keep up with the rest of the class because the material could be right in front of them. I think a big worry is that iPads can be expensive and a distraction, but I'm starting to think that the benefits are outweighing the downsides. A lot of students tend to learn better with technology and an iPad is perfect. It is small, portable, easy to use, and very effective.

  19. I think that if used correctly, iPads can definitely help to revolutionize education. Not only do they continually keep the kids using technology, they also can help them to be more interactive in class if used together with things such as smart boards. A teacher can use them to make interactive lessons, like Q&A's to go along with a powerpoint presentation. There are so many different things that can be done on an iPad that can enhance learning. They are good for displaying and demonstrating information as well as keeping the students interested and making learning more fun for them. It can help visual learners because they are able to see first hand everything they are learning and can control what they want to see for longer, etc. and the iPad can also benefit more introverted students because with things like the Q&A's and short answers, the teacher can be able to see every students thoughts even if they don't want to share it with the class aloud. While there are many benefits to using tablets and iPads, they are also very expensive so it would have to be made worth it by the teachers using them. Also, it can definitely be seen as a distraction in many cases, so that would have to be monitored closely by the teacher to ensure that the iPad is being using solely for educational purposes. As long as the benefits can outweigh the few negative aspects, I think iPads can be a great tool to use in the classroom.

  20. Ipads could most definitely revolutionize education. Instead of taking quizzes with a pencil and paper, students could take them on their iPads and this could possibly put them at ease more than sitting there with a pencil and paper. It seems to me that Ipads could take a little bit of the fear factor out of being texted because so many kids today have either an Ipod, an Iphone, or a Ipad/tablet of some sort that they are used to using at a very young age. It would also be excellent for a teacher to do before giving a lesson to test kids to see what they already have knowledge of, and incorporate what they may already know. For example, I took a criminology class and before the start of every class, he would have a question up on the screen with multiple choice answers A, B, C, and D. He would give us about a minute to think about it, and we would all use our previous knowledge to try to answer the question. A poll would then come up showing what percent answered each choice by a bar graph. After we saw the results, the teacher would explain why the correct answer was correct, and start the lesson from there. I think doing something like this teacher did would be an excellent use of an Ipad. iPads could revolutionize education this way, by making quizzing easier, possibly faster, and less scary for students.

  21. I think iPads are becoming this new thing in education. There are plenty of schools that are buying iPads for teachers or even for the entire student body. IPads are going to change the way that students are taught and the way that teachers teach. Whether or not iPads are actually a good tool to use in the classroom is debatable. However we are always looking for the latest and greatest tool that schools can use to get students more into technology and make teaching more creative. Before we know it every classroom with have an iPad for each and every student and they will do everything on that iPad. This can bring a more intimate learning experience for students because they have the lessons and activities right at their fingertips, which is something educators will stress when all schools transfer to iPads. Me personally I am very on the fence about iPads within the classroom. I believe for some people, like myself, I need evidence that iPads really do help students learn better in order to believe they are beneficial. Although I do think that if a teacher had one for themselves and maybe two others then that would not be bad. I am not necessarily saying iPads should not be used at all because I think that they are great tools and can probably do a lot. I just believe that educators need to be cautious when revolutionizing education and including iPads and doing studies to make sure they are beneficial are essential before we switch just because everyone believes iPads can do great things. IPads will 100% change everything we know about teaching in the future, we as future educators and current educators need to make sure that this revolution is beneficial and will not cause any problems in the end.

  22. Yes, I do believe that iPads will revolutionize education. Technology is increasing more and more everyday. They are coming out with some amazing technology techniques for education and much other things. Technology is roaring across the world. I know in my high school we had smart boards in every room, a set of laptops, and a set of iPads for teachers to sign out for a day to use in the classrooms. I believe iPads could be used in a good way to help teach in the classroom, but at the same time I believe that iPads in the classroom could lead to distractions. I think depending on the different teachers they will all have their different opinions on using iPads in the classroom. I feel that having children get up and do work actively on the board or smart board is better for them then using the iPad. By using the iPad students sit in their seats and answer questions through the iPad, but i personally believe that having the students get up and be actively involved rather than sitting in their desks they will learn better.

  23. Having had experience with ipad in the classroom I was able to see how important ipads can be in a classroom. Students are able to get a different technological experience. Students are able to play games on the ipad and even learn to practice cursive on the ipad. The teachers is responsible for allowing the students to share time one the ipad and everyone will get a equal amount of time. The ipad is a great tool to use during snack time and even indoor recess. The ipad is used to technologically advance the students understanding on certain topics. The ipad can have students practice math problems and even listen to a story with the ear buds. I personally think that the ipad will change the way that classroom works. If schools have enough founding to give each student a ipad it could change the way teachers teach forever. The ipad is a great tool to use in the class. The ipad is a interactive way for student to keep in touch with technology and also to communicate with their classmates with technology. The ipad can change the way the classroom runs because it is a students own mini computer right before their eyes. I do not think the whole class period should just use the ipad but I believe that the ipad will make a great edition to a classrooms tools.

  24. I think that with the growing technology the use of Ipads and tablets within the classroom will be beneficial to our students so that their teachnology skills can progress. Utilizing tablets within the classroom will also give students a chance to learn in a way other than being lectured. Tablets and Ipads however should not be used for an entire class period because the students may begin to goof off and become off track with the lesson. The advantage of having this pieces of great technology could also be a disadvantage depending how the teacher makes the students utilize the tablet. For instance, if the teacher has the children voice their thoughts on an interactive screen with everyone the students will lose the ability to communicate verbally. Children do have enough technology in their worlds today and have forgotten how to communicate. I do still believe that it would be revolutionary to have these in a classroom but limit the access to them!

  25. I do think ipads will definitly revolutionize education today and in the future. There are so many things and ipad can do and a computer can, also it has the abilitie of several electronic devices in one. You can research on the internet, type a paper, take a picture or capture a video. Also there are many apps that will allow you to do much more like educational games, and even keep in touch with a teacher so he or she can moniter a students work.

  26. I believe that iPads will revolutionize education for the better. Technology is used everywhere these days and it is only going to get bigger and take over more things in this world. IPads will help children learn in a different way. Visual learning is one way that children learn and by using an iPad will enhance that type of learning. Also, Apple has many different applications where children can learn simple subjects all the way up to complicated subjects. Different programs on the iPad will help the younger generation learn simple things like colors of the rainbow, abc's, and multiplication. Other applications can help high school students learn how to write a paper, download text books for classes, or help them with math homework. Technology will become more common in the school systems in the upcoming years and it will have a positive impact on students learning.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I do think iPads will revolutionize education. I personally use an iPad for school and I find it to be a very helpful tool. Younger students can use it for so many different things because of all the different applications that can be downloaded. Students nowadays are very visual learners because everything they need can be found on the internet or tv. iPads will help students visualize the concepts they are learning in the classroom so they will be better connected to the ideas. iPads would also encourage some students that have iPads at home to download the apps they are using in class and further their learning experience at home. It is essential that schools stay with the times and incorporate more technology into the classroom so bringing iPads in would definitely have a positive impact.

  28. Using iPads in a classroom could be an excellent way of incorporating technology into the classroom. This would allow the students to have an interactive way of participating in class from their seats. It would allow students who are sometimes shy about talking in front of the class an opportunity to have more input. The only negative aspect of using this technology is the cost. IPads run for about $500 each while is very expensive for a school to afford. However, maybe with some fundraising it would be possible.

  29. I pad is revolutionizing education; in the coming years I believe it will make education more at students finger tips. Classes will be more interactive with a device such as the I pad in the picture. The instructor and teacher can interact on a technology based level. Similar to the assignment that we had in class which included us voicing our opinion via text message or through the internet. This can also be done on the I pad; this will make this class a lot more interesting both for the instructor and students

  30. As technology advancing the use for the iPad in academic environments shall increase due to the increasing number of usage the iPad has in school. Companies will began to develop apps geared toward educational learning, with the increasing demand and popularity of the iPad is it inevitable for school to make drastic changes towards using the iPad in an educational setting. Recently, Miss Porter's Boarding School, located in Farmington, Ct made it a requirement to have an iPad for school. This just one example on how iPads are making their way into the school systems.

  31. Using ipads into the classroom is a great way to incorporate the new technology to the students. Also it leads to a lot of information about a lesson and you can use a lot of sources. It gives to all of us a huge background about ipads and how to use them into a classroom. Especially today that all kids are into technology so much it is the best chance to start using them into the classrooms. There are many free application and they can use it for flash cards, testing themselves. The only aspect negative that I see with ipads use is the price which is not cheap. To buy an ipad I will cost at least $600 .

  32. As with anything else related to education, the ultimate test for I pads in the classroom will be the challenge to make them affordable and accessible to the largest number of students. Currently, with the price of an I pad around $500 at retail the best incentive to introduce them into the classroom is their introduction thru loaner programs with the schools. In the future these programs should be expanded to insure that the greatest numbers of students are able to participate in this technology. When the retail price eventually drops there will be a corresponding spike in the utilization of this technology in the classroom. Two areas that can especially benefit are: special needs students and utilization as e-readers. With budget cut-backs forcing schools to carry outdated versions of textbooks use of e-readers would guarantee that downloading the latest version of a textbook would be economical. I pads will allow the formation of custom courses. As an educational tool the hands-on accessibility facilitates an interactive approach to learning.

  33. I think iPads will revolutionize education. iPads can do so much more than a regular computer. Incorporating them into the classroom will be beneficial to students and teachers since technology is increasing at a steady rate. Students can use iPads for reading and interactive educational games. However, with all this advancement of technology comes a high price and many schools can't even afford enough computers for their students so if there was a nation wide switch to iPads, the more costly product, then school in many communities would be in trouble.

  34. I really do think iPads will revolutionize education, just like the smart board did. It provides a way for student to stay engaged in a lesson no matter what the topic is. It also provides a teacher with access to those shy students. It would make students stay alert in the classroom and pay attention because they will never know when the teacher will call on them to demonstrate their response. It can also make students really give thought to what their going to say or how they say it because other students will see their work and take notice. And of course its FUN!! The only disadvantage I can see is the cost and the rate at which technology evolves each day. New technology is expensive and even frustrating when newer things and upgrades are just around the corner.

  35. I do believe ipads will revolutionize education. There are not many things you can not do with an ipad. They are small, and wireless so they save space. They can be used anywhere in the classroom. They can be used for just about everything, and there are always new apps coming out. They can be used to surf the internet, for games, to create word documents etc. They are fun and I think it will draw the students attention and they will be more excited about learning.

  36. I think that iPads definitely have the potential to revolutionize education. Without a doubt, the tablets can be a great addition to the classroom but with budget cuts across the board in most school districts, it's difficult for teachers to get their hands on this technology for their students. At the school I volunteer at they recently received a hundred iPads for the school to use. When word of the purchase went around, parents and faculty debated whether this was worthy of their tax dollars. Teachers told parents about all the great apps and activities they could use with the iPads but parents were still reluctant to have their second graders using such an expensive piece of equipment when the money could have gone towards more classrooms having Smartboards or even replacing their ten year old textbooks. Personally, I think the district should have decided to add Smartboards to each classroom so the whole class could be engaged before purchasing a set of iPads for the school to share. The iPads are extremely useful in the classroom and the students absolutely love to use them but I also think Smartboards are absolutely crucial for classrooms nowadays. As we progress I think iPads will also become a significant component of education and as hesitant as parents are to accept this new technology into the classroom I think they will soon learn how iPads can and will revolutionize education.

  38. iPad's will not revolutionize technology. I believe that another type of better tablet will come along and blow the iPad out of the water. Don't get me wrong Apple has done great things when it comes to utilizing technology in the classroom. The iPad has the potential to be used in classrooms as an educational tool but the iPad is still very primitive. The iPad is linear in terms of what you can and can't do. Technology is always changing and growing at a rapid rate. There will be something else that will come along and kill the iPad, but for now I wouldn't use iPad's in my classroom. The iPad will not revolutionize technology!

  39. I think IPads' are a great addition to the classroom! For myself, i find myself referring to the internet or an online data base for assistance. In the classroom, with elementary students they will be able to use the IPads' to perform lessons, interact with games or videos found on the internet or made by the teacher. IPads' allow students and teachers to incorporate technology into their lessons making it more interesting for the student! I think that having engaging lessons for the students is very important especially in elementary classrooms. It is hard to keep the attention of the younger students but with technology teachers can grab there attention and hold their interest. On the IPads' there are educational games that can incorporate lessons such as reading, writing and mathematics. Technology has come very far over the years and there really isn't anything you cant do with technology. Having an iPad is almost like having another teacher in the classroom because you can have students branch off in small groups or alone to work on lessons on the iPad. IPads' have great potential in the classroom and it is important to keep up with the rate of change within technology. I am a strong believer that students should be able to be engaged in the lesson and the iPad really allows students to work independently while enjoying what they are doing! The iPad will definitely revolutiolize the classroom!

    1. Yes, I strongly believe IPADS will revolutionize education because it will allow students to become more envolved and discover more on their own. The whole purpose for learning is finding ways to discover and learn new things that the children find meaningful. As we all know, children are attracted to technology and they are lucky because they are allowed to do so much more than most, with the use of IPADS. IPADS allow for more engaging ways to intergrate lessons with students and can allow students to use technology to their advantage. IPADS can allow students to work in so many different ways both independently and as a group. There are so many websites such as bubbl.us that allow for students to use technology to help build thoughts. I think IPADs are a great addition to a classroom and will be well worth it in the long run because the students will appreciate learning more.

  40. I think Ipads would really revolutionize education because it follows the new era of learning which is technology. I personally think we shouldn't use ipads because they could be a distraction to the kids if they all had an ipad to mess with during class. I also think that we already have enough technology that does the same thing as an Ipad but is better for a class room environment. For example the Smart boards are good because the whole class can use it and can concentrate on whats going on in the lesson and just like an Ipad they are able to physically interact and touch the board and move things around. Ipads could be a good addition to learning but could also be more of a distraction in my view.

  41. I think IPADS are a gerat addition the classroom and will be evolving very shortly. Technology is taking over the way people communicate and socialize and it is just the next step to get students using it in their classrooms. IPADS will allow students to experience different ways to approach the internet and the IPAD, which will help them expand the way they look at techology. The smart boards today are teaching the kids now how to operate without pen and paper, which will be helpful once IPADS enter the classroom. I think it would be a bad idea if each student had their own IPAD because it may be a distraction to the kids.

  42. I believe tablets are a great addition to the classroom. It provides "real time" learning. It is also efficient and helps with organization. I understand how some may be concerned that a tablet could lead to distractions, but I think the benefits out weigh the risks. They could possibily provide a spark for learning new and difficult subjects, and provide a level of excitement that traditional techniques cannot. Like all educational tools, the teacher needs to establish a structure in which it will be most effective.

  43. As technology advancing the use for the iPad in academic environments shall increase due to the increasing number of usage the iPad has in school. Companies will began to develops app geared toward educational learning. With the increasing demand and popularity of the iPad is it invitable for school to make drastic changes towards using the iPad in Educational Setting. Recently, Miss Porter's Boarding School, located in Farmington Ct made it a requirement to have an iPad for school. This is just one example on how iPads are making their way into the school systems.

  44. Ipads are a great technology and many apps are being created for education. But I do not think that they will revolutionize education. They won't because they have distractions towards the learning. The students can get off topic very easily and want to simply play games because they know that they can on them. Also because I think that each student having one would make it difficult for the teacher to make sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to do. I think the smart-boards are better since everyone's eyes will all be looking in the same place, and they will all be on the same page.

  45. I haven't had much firsthand experience with tablets, but I have heard that they a good for staying organized and playing games. I do not think there is a place for tablets in the classroom. I think that children in elementary school should be focused on learning, and if technology needs to be incorporated, computers should be used. Children at the elementary level should not be concerned with iPhones and iPads - they should be concerned with learning. While I understand that there are educational apps out there, I think having tablets in the classroom will ultimately distract the children because there are so many "fun" features that appeal to children. Using tablets are home for educational purposes may help the children learn and understand new concepts, but I do not think they should be used at school. I think that the teacher should be educating the students and showing them new things and ideas...a tablet should not be doing this for the teacher.

  46. I think iPads are just the beginning. They certainly are a great tool for learning, reviewing, practicing - engaging, hands on, visual. Also, portable and perhaps less intimidating than big computer screens (especially for younger kids). Since a lot of children are already using electronic devices in their every day lives, the familiarity can help in acquisition of new material. Using technology in a classroom is even more important for those children who do not have access to it at home and are at risk of staying behind and being less competitive in a future. I'd use tablets in my classroom as one of many methods/ tools. However, I would like to ensure that while my students are digitally literate, they know how to interact and communicate with each other in person, as I see these skills may go extinct if we only communicate through images and from behind the screens. I think using technology in classrooms has a potential of teaching children how to use it critically - through modeling, discussion, and practice.

  47. I believe that iPads will revolutionize education for the better. They offer so many opportunites for students to learn outside of the classroom. A teacher can now have a class blog and put up the days homework, as well as helpful websites that show a different way of teaching the covered lesson for students who may not have understood the material in class. Not only this but iPads are also very ecofriendly. You can use them for much longer than your traditional textbook because a new edition of a book is only a download away, as well as one iPad can download many different subjects where traditional textbooks are one very large book per subject. This is also very helpful for students because it allows for much lighter backpacks at the end of the day. I have volunteered in the school system before and it is extremely unsettling to see small children taking home backpacks of homework that weigh more than they do themselves! The iPad has and will change the methods of education, for the better.
