Visual Learners

The software that we used in class this week (Bubbl.US) is designed for students that are visual learners. How could you use this program in an elementary classroom? What are the benefits of using a "mind-mapping" tool like this?

  1. A program like Bubbl.US can be used in an elementary school class room for English assignments. A mind-mapping tool like this will help students to get organized. It can also help them visualize the sequence of a story. After reading a story, a teacher can ask her students to make a story board to show the sequence of the story. Or, before doing a writing assignment, a teacher can have the students plan out their story a head of time using a story board. This will help them organize their thoughts, remember what to write in their paper, and it is also a good brainstorming tool.

  2. I think that this would be a very useful tool in the classroom. Instead of using pen and paper or markers, bubbl.us can be opened on the smartboard and the students will be able to use the smartboard to create their organizational chart. The students will be more likely to get involved and brainstorm if they have a chance to go up and use the smartboard. Bubbl.us also has the advantage that it can model nearly all of the organizational charts that they kids learn on paper such as compare/contrast, tree diagrams, bubble diagrams, etc. The benefit of using a "mind-maping" tool like this is that students can visually see their thoughts in an organized way, and they might be able to understand better what the teacher wants them to understand. Visual learners can literally see their thoughts because they are able to organize them on a fun website, and kids will be more interested in learning and participating because technology is involved.

  3. The big positive aspect about bubbl.us is that children don't have to organize their thoughts on their own. Sometimes writing everything down all at once can be overwhelming to remember and read. Doing a map using bubbl.us is very organized and color coordinated. It uses bold and italics to group certain pieces together in order. All of this, together, ensures that the student will have a clean and organized map to go navigate through in the way the teacher wants them to see it. This is perfect for any sort of brain-storming or summarizing of stories. It highlights main events and cuts right to a necessary part when looking for an answer to a question.

  4. Using a mind mapping tool such as Bubbl.US is very beneficial for students. I like the online mind mapping tool because it is very adaptive. Students could work on individual maps, or bubbles to brainstorm their initial ideas and then a class map could be posted on a smart board and all students can contribute their ideas to one central map. Unlike a "chart and marker" map, online maps allow you to edit and add more bubbles when more ideas pop into your head. With a chart, it is easy to run out of space and extra ideas can appear messy or confusing on paper. I would use online mapping in my classroom when discussing events that happened in a story, planning and organzing an essay and even when students have to brainstorm ideas for research.

  5. Bubbl is a great site to help people become more organized with their thoughts and to map out the steps they would want to take while creating anything. The way you can use this in an elementary school setting would be to explain the lesson that is being taught that day. For example, one day your lesson could be on animals and on the bubbl chart you would map out what activities you will be doing. Some advantages of using a map like this is: Organization, Visually Appealing, Easy to Understand, Ideas are Right in Front of You, etc. Sooner or later everyone is going to have to learn how to create the bubble map because a lot of teachers at the elementary school already use it in their lesson. This is just one great tool to have available to students.

  6. Bubbl is a great tool to use no matter what you're using it for. It is especially useful to use as an aid within a classroom. This mapping tool will allow students to organize their thoughts. It will especially allow a classroom to organize their thoughts together and snowball off of each other to enhance learning. The mapping tool is a lot more helpful than some other organization tools that are used in a classroom because not everything is jumbled together and it does not make you overwhelmed. I think this is a key factor considering most students get overwhelmed in the classroom. I personally would utilize this tool in my classroom when using a smartboard if I am given the privilege to use one so that my students can broaden their technology skills as well as being able to incorporate technology into my lessons.

  7. What better way to embrace the visual technology that is now available to educators than thru the use of the new mapping tools? Now even old school teachers who have been reluctant to get on board with the fresh new visual technological approaches have a user-friendly means of implementation with a minimal amount of learning time investment on their part. The advantage will be to offer lesson plans that maintain student focus while giving the educator an opportunity to exercise an interactive technologically driven curriculum.

  8. The bubble.us webiste is a great tool for classroom use. More specfically, it is a great tool for students that are visual learners. Bubble.us allows you to literally map out anything you want. It could be implemented in a lesson on nutrition, where the main bubble could be nutrition and the smaller "children" bubbles could be the different food groups and even further off of that, the types of foods that would fit into those food groups. Also, it would be great for a loesson on the food chain, seasons, or even for a book review. The benefits are numerous, students can visually see the transgression of events. It also gives structure to a lesson and allows the students too look back on something and see where it began/where ended. What is really interesting is that teachers have implemented maps/webs into their classrooms for years and now it can be further explored through this website.

  9. A program like Bubbl.us can easily be incorporated into younger education levels, maybe more specifically in English lessons. Instead of the traditional pencil and paper, this program allows students a more interactive method way to express their ideas. It could be used when discussing the different points of a story or help to outline a potential paper. This method allows students to better view their ideas and allows room for easy formatting or change. The color-coding feature is especially helpful to all students; it allows them to easily categorize the given information into an understandable format.

  10. I think Bubbl.us is great for elementary teachers to use in there classrooms. It is a great way for students to organize all of their thoughts and see them visually on the screen connected to one another. I think it would mostly be used in similar ways like a story map. It is easy for children to follow and I don't think that is complicated for them to understand.

  11. using the mid mapping tool could come in handy with a book that was read in class. The students could organize the plot, setting, characters, climax, etc. This could be done in class. It is an interactive and fun way to get all of the students involved. Benefits to using a tool like this include organization of thoughts and encourgaes the children to think critically.

  12. Not only can teachers use this tool to help children visualize a confusing or complex topic, but students can use Bubbl to map out their own projects. The colorful and intuitive interface is ideal for students who don't work well when words are by themselves. Being able to draw their ideas instead of simply writing them will give visual learners a much needed advantage.

  13. Being primarily a visual learner myself, I see the benefit of using bubbl.US in the classroom because it can show the students how a subject can be broken down into smaller parts or mapped out. When I see how students are at times subject to tedious memorization and the strategies associated with them, it makes me truly wonder how anything is taught in our school systems. With the ability to "mind-map" things out through the use of bubbl.US, it makes the learning process for those who can benefit from it much simpler because it also helps to pick out the main points along with the core ideas focused around them. The students will no longer be confused about what's important and what's not.

  14. You could use bubbl in an elementary classroom for multiple things. One would be for English because generally in elementary schools teachers use some form of bubbles for seeing how a story develops (plot, character, setting, etc.). Another thing bubbl can be used for history lesson. Say the teacher was teaching the class about thanksgiving and why we celebrate it. They can put thanksgiving at the top and then have a child bubble that says the date it is on, then another bubble stating why we celebrate it. At the end everything is pieced together nicely and the students begin to see how everything connects to thanksgiving and it’s not just a day where families get together and eat turkey, it is more than that. I think that bubbl can really be used for a lot of things in an elementary school classroom. It is a good way to organize things and it’s a really good visual tool. The benefits of using a tool like this allows students to see things visually as opposed to imagining it in their heads. If a student just imagines these things in their head they can get confused and their thoughts are jumbled. If a mapping tool like this is used it helps to organize thoughts and to be able to see how their thoughts were organized and it gives them a deeper understanding once everything is on a board or on a piece of paper. Visual learning, especially using concept mapping, really helps students learn in such a different way. Not all students can listen to a lesson and understand everything the teacher is saying. We learn in different ways and this concept mapping tool helps reinforce that idea.

  15. Using Bubbl.us was a great tool to organize ideas. The way the website is set up allows students to understand easily how to use the tools to create a story board. I think that bubbl.us can be used in elementary classrooms for many different purposes. First using bubbl.us for creating a story is a great idea. Using bubbl allows the students to see their stories come to life in a way with the bubbles connecting to each other. This will allow the students to see how one idea connects to another. Creating a story outline on bubbl allows the students to see their story and see how their ideas connect to the different parts of the stories. Bubbl can also be used to show a timeline of events, or how to prep something. Bubble allows students to see a beginning and an end. If a teacher was teaching a lesson on making cookies the students would see that as they add the ingredients together and go through the different steps of baking allows flour and eggs to become a delicious cookie. The students can also great a time line of their lives starting with the day they were born to their first day of third grade. Bubbl allows students to see their ideas and lessons through technology. The great thing about bubbl is it allows students to stop using paper and use the computer to organize their ideas. Overall I think using Bubbl is great for elementary students!

  16. Mind Mapping are great tools for the classroom. It shows a visual view of what is going on in the classroom. Students can use mind mapping for every subject for example reading you can use it for plot web or character traits, in writing you can use it do map out what you are going to write, science you can use them as fact bubbles for certain topic. The benefits of mind mapping is they are easy to use, easy to comprehend and they help the students get a visual idea of what is going on in the classroom. I rememeber when I was in elementary school and we used mind mapping and it made things so much clearer because the information was mapped clear in an easy way to comprehend.

  17. I never knew or ever heard of Bubbl.us until this week in class. There are so many ways that I could incorporate using Bubbl.us in elementary school with students. When children are learning how to write essays or paragraphs they can use Bubbl.us to pick out the main topics they will be writing about and then little side notes underneath with detail and quotes. It could also be used for a book report/story in each bubble talking about the plot, main characters, climax, and other details of the story. This site helps children understand and plot out what they are going to do for their assignment step by step. Mind mapping is so easy for the children to use and to understand. Making a mind map helps children comprehend in detail what they will be doing. Some benefits of using this as a mind mapping tool is that it gives the students a better picture and visual idea of what they will be doing.

  18. Any visual mapping tools can be especially useful for children in elementary school classrooms. Mapping tools such as Bubbl.us can help students in an English class by plotting main events, sentence structure, etc. I am a visual learner so resources that exemplify those skills are crucial to my learning. Many children at the elementary school age also understand information when it is displayed for them. These visual learning tools can also be used in science lessons and any other subjects that involve relationships. Students who are struggling to grasp the concepts in a class that is mostly oral learning would benefit from the opportunity to learn using these tools.

  19. The software can be used in an elementary classroom to show comparison between two things or more. Also, to place their thoughts to a main idea, for a paragraph or for a story they are going to write. The benefits of using this software is that all their thoughts are on one piece of paper instead of separate sheets, keeps the student organized, organized while searching and placing information into the right sections, also the layout is simple and easy to understand and explain.

  20. This technology could definitely be used in an elementary school classroom in a number of ways. It would be a great brainstorming tool. Students could have an assignment, such as writing a paper, and use the bubbles to come up with different story ideas and additional bubbles for details about the story. This use of visual mapping makes it easy for the children to have all their ideas in one place.

  21. The software bubbl.us is a very powerful tool. It can be used in elementary school for students to do a rough draft on a paper or to simply jot down the ideas about a specific topic. Teachers can use this to review books are get students reactions using bubbl.us. A mind mapping software such this is very beneficial because it helps you gathers your thoughts. For example if students don’t know where to begin on a certain topic they can use this tool to put their thoughts and ideas visually into perspective.

  23. Mind-mapping tools are effective strategies to use in an elementary classroom in order to further students’ learning and organizational skills. E-generation students are exposed to an abundance of information they may find overwhelming. It is crucial for student, with such an abundance of information readily available to them, to have the ability to identify the relevant facts and organize them in a productive manner. In addition, it assists students who are visual learners and allows students to incorporate already understood topics with newly discovered information. This gradual increase of intellectual ability encourages a higher order of thinking. According to Bloom’s Taxonomy of a classification of learning objectives with education, organization plays a key element in the affective domain. A student’s ability to put together different values, information, and ideas, in addition to accommodating them with his/her own schema is crucial to overall educational progress. Websites, such as Bubbl.us, allow for students to reach the higher levels of thinking, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, in a technologically equip time period. Any situation that bombards students with a massive amount of information or a lesson that incorporates a gradual accumulation of knowledge should utilize mapping in order to keep the students on track. This can also be used by teachers as an informal evaluation of students’ progress with a subject area. KWLs are a perfect example of mapping that can become an effective informal evaluation tool for teachers.

  24. Essentially, bubbl is a great tool for mapping out a project, explaining your self, planning out a piece of writing and sharing your thought process with others. In an elementary classroom I think it would be excellent for students to use bubbl maps after reading a story. Using this type of map to explain their thoughts is great because it can be saved and referenced easily. Besides that aspect it is also great for visual learners, so unlike paragraphs or essays that students would just have to read through and get bored, the bubbl explains the meaning in a layed out and organized way that does not seem overwhelming. Therefore a bubbl would be great for displaying complicated and large amounts of information from either stories, field trips and/or research.

  25. You can us this program in an elementary classroom when you want students to brainstorm ideas. It helps students organize their thoughts about things they've worked on in the classroom like stories they read or videos they watched. It also helps the teacher present information in a clearer way to students who need to see things mapped out, just like in a math class where a teacher draws a picture representation. One benfit of using a tool like this in the classroom is that instead of the teacher just giving students the answer, they are the ones who come up with the main ideas. Coming up with the ideas themsleves is also a way to help them remember material.

  26. A Program like bubbl.us it is very helpful for young generation of course. For children that today are all about technology and very lazy writing everything down in paper with pen a pencil.Bubbl.us not only can organise their thougts but makes them more conected with today's technology. For me is little bit challenging but still i can handel it very easy.

  27. After using bubbl.us and seeing how it works I could see where it could be very bennificial to visual learners in an elementary school classroom. The think it could be used for endless assignments, but there is one thing I think it is most useful for. After students read a story, I think it could be used to map out the plot of a story. It could explain how the ending of the story came about through a series of events, showing what may have caused something to happen in the story. Bubbl.us very successfully allows linking, and in understanding a story, you must see all these links in the plot. This tool could be extremely successful in showing to visual learners where these links take place and why. Another thing I think bubbl.us could be used for is showing steps in a process, kind of how we used it for our webquest storyboard. Any list of steps could be easily shown and described using bubbl.us. It would be benneficial to use this tool for visual learners because it shows connections very clearly.

  28. After using bubbl.us I feel this program would be extremely effective in an elementary classroom! For myself, I am a visusal learner so this program is helpful for myself. Bubbl.us allows the educator and students to organize ideas, clarify thoughts, intergrate new knowledge, analyze information and think critically. For elementary students i think seeing things visually is more effective than just hearing them. With bubbl.us the teachers are able to create a colorful, easy to follow bubble map to help put the students thoughts and ideas in a easier to understand way. This tool will definitely be more effective than a lecture because it is more interesting for the students to see things on the smart board or over head projector rather than with a pen and paper. However, i think any type of visual learning is more effective than other types of learning. You could use this website to show story plots, to explain topics discussed in class, to lay out details of a topic or even to organize expectations in a classroom. This is a very organized and easy to understand teaching method. I intend on incorporating bubbl.us in my classroom ecspecially after reading a story because i think the lines connecting the bubbles will make it more clear for the students to see how stories follow an order and it is important to know the events and why they happen in what order! This is a very useful tool and it will be extremely effective in elementary classrooms!

  29. As a visual learner myself this website can come in handy for the rest of my college career when I need to write an essay and it will also help when I become a teacher. Using this website in a class room would be helpful when the class is brainstorming different ideas about something, even when talking about a story the class just read and having to put together all the the important details and how they all connect to each other to make this story. The benefits to using mind- mapping is when you start thinking about something and you have so many details you can write them down and connect them to keep your thoughts and thinking straight so you don't forget anything. This tool is very usefull and I'm glad I was finally introduced to it.

  30. Being a visual learned, like me, showing the way you map concepts out are easier than saying them aloud in class. Color coding and organizing a mind-map will help students be able to brainstorm their thoughts in an organized way. This type of mapping allows student to tell their story in an organized fashion that takes them from one thought to the next. This is something I hope to incorporate into my classroom because it helps visual learners see clearer and is still beneficial to other students.

  31. There are a lot of benefits to using technology like bubbl.us. It's always helpful to organize thoughts and ideas and helps us figure out what works and what doesn't work. When you lay ideas out like that, you can see how things are connected and helps us think and remember what's important. Before teaching students about a story, you could use a program like this to help organize the main points and what you want them to learn out of a lesson. Students could even use this to organize their own ideas. It helps get visual learners active in the lessons. That's important. Every student should feel included.

  32. The technology that is provided by bubbl.us would be very helpful in a classroom. It is great for organizing the students thoughts, as well as, promoting forward thinking. Students could use this as a tool to plan ahead. Plus the fact that it is so visual, it helps with the inclusion of all students. Mapping out stories or events will help students in their ability to problem solve. I think it is a great tool.

  33. Bubbl.us is a great resource for students that are visual learners especially in an elementary school classroom. It could be used to plan out five paragraph essays to help them think about what the main ideas are and what their supporting details will be. It can also be used in earlier grades to review a story using the characters or plot/setting. For social studies and science it can be used to help them map out what they learned and maybe what they want to know. There are many benefits in using a mind-mapping tool like this because it can really help them plan out and outline their ideas. Bubbl.us is also a great website because it is very simple to use so even young students can use it. I will definitely encourage and incorporate the use of bubble mapping into my classroom in the future because I think it is quite beneficial, especially to visual learners.

  34. there are many advantages to using Bubbl.us. First of all, there are a lot of visual learners, and bubbl.us can help the students understand better what is going on in that assignment. Also, it helps students plan out their lesson better. Bubbl.us also alloys students to be organized. I think bubbl.us is a great tool

  35. I found bubbl to be a very useful tool that helped me organize my thoughts very easily. It is a great website that can be used in so many different ways and for so many different age groups. I myself could use it to plan out a research paper, a lesson plan, or as we were instructed, to organize a webquest. I feel that I will definitely use bubbl outside of this class now that I know about it. While it is a great tool for students of my age, it can also be used in an elementary classroom for different things. It would be a great tool to help the students organize their thoughts by making venn diagrams, KWL charts, double bubbles, and more. It would be a great tool to use on a smart board before a lesson and have the kids come up and fill in things that foreshadow what they are going to be doing. I think bubbl is a great website because it can help most everybody in the class by getting them involved and for the visual learners, it helps them see all their ideas and the ideas of their classmates mapped out. Using this also helps students to discover more technology and can help to get the students more interactive and involved in the classroom.

  36. You could use this program in an elementary classroom very easily when coming up with concepts related to the whole. What you would do for example is, take the word dog and see how many links a student could come up with things related to a dog like hairy, 4 legs, likes bones, walks on leash, then branch these ideas out from dog. The advantage of using this type of program in the classroom is 1. it shows connections with items very easily. 2. Students will learn to utilize from this technology for future projects. 3. It's a great alternative to the traditional black or white board drawing. Basically it's great showcasing technology in the class.

  37. There are many benefits to using this as a "mind-mapping" tool such as bubbl, especially for younger children. For starters anything that involves looking at a screen immediately interests them. Also anything with a bright color scheme will motivate them to stay interested. The tool itself will help to show how many smaller concepts create one WHOLE picture. Teaching the students how to make visual charts on their own will help them to map out their thoughts when writing papers or doing projects in the future.

  38. There are several ways to use "mind mapping" in an Elementary Classroom. You can use these to help students organize their thoughts and details in planning a paper or project. You can even use mind maps in Math lesson where you can give the topic in a larger bubble, then have examples and their answers in the "child" bubbles. You can use these maps in almost everything you teach the students because there are endless possible ways to incorporate these into a classroom. The most important benefit of mind maps are to help children become organzied. As children grow up and move into higher grades they are responsible for coming up with their own ideas and finding a way to make then organized. So it is important to guide the students to using useful tools now and learn how to use them successfully. Another benefit besides organization, is that mind maps get the children thinking outside the box! By thinking of a simple word and putting it in a bubble they can easily stem off of those words and create elaborate thoughts.

  39. A program such as Bubbl.US could be used in an elementary classroom to help students learn how to organize their thoughts and ideas. For the most part when kids express their ideas and thoughts, they just jump around from idea to idea with no knowledge of how they got there. By using "mind-mapping" tools, a student can visually see their thought process which is much easier then trying to have them explain their thoughts through words. For example, an appropriate time to use this mapping method could be when they need to make a storyline. A student may know exactly who they want as their characters and the ending they want to have, but by using mind-mapping tools they can visually place and add more steps and information where needed. The benefits of using mind-mapping tools is not only to get students interest in creating a fun and interesting web or chain of thoughts, but help try and teach in a visual and easy to understand manner how our thoughts plan out.

My husband always laughs at me because we'll be talking about something and next thing you know I am bringing up another topic alltogether. He'll ask me how I got there and I have a string of connections to the new topic. I should use Bubbl to explain it to him - LOL.

  40. Tool like bubbl.us can be used at any level of education. It helps organize ideas, has a visual appeal, and editing is so much faster and cleaner than with traditional paper and pencil charts. I think in elementary school bubble mapping can be used in any area of the study - language arts (annalyzing stories, and writing stories), biology, geography, and earth science (habitats, climate zones, food chains, etc.), history (compare/ contrast), and planning any classroom projects. Mapping tool can be used to introduce new concepts as well as connecting new to already existing knowledge to demonstrate continuity and relevance. It can be a great tool to present complex ideas/ processes by breaking them into smaller steps. It can be used for planning and reflecting, and it is sure to engage the students who can see the creative process as it unravels.

  41. Having this tool in an elementary setting will be great. One thing elementary students(and most people) like and welcome very well, is technology. Having this tool in a classroom will help them organize their thoughts in a fun way. They can visually see their ideas and the way they relate to each other. I find that this tool has helped me organize my ideas in creating my web quest and writing essays. So if students can be exposed to a tool like this, as early as elementary, they can get in the habit of using it for all their academic needs and more. This is a great tool for anyone to posses.

  42. Bubbl.us can be a helpful tool in the classroom. I think it is a good idea to introduce it along with other organizational tools. Some kids may find it confusing while others will have no problems with it. I personally prefer hand writing my ideas because I find I remember the information better that way. Some people may agree with me while others disagree, however it can still be a very helpful tool to show the class.

    1. I agree. The more senses I use like writing (touch) the better I remember. In college I used to write all of my notes in red at the end of the semester. But I think to use Bubbl to organize rather than remember is where it shines.

  43. I think that bubbl.us can definitely be used in an elementary level classroom. The program could be used by teachers to teach a lesson about a given topic and to show the main ideas of the topic. Or it could even be used by the students, with the proper instruction. The students could prepare "webs" or "circle charts" to shows their knowledge and understanding of a given topic or idea. Using "mind mapping" tools can be beneficial to everyone, especially teachers and students in the classroom. These mapping tools are a great way to keep your ideas organized and to display your overall message or point. They are very simple and are easy create and understand; and I think they can definitely be used effectively in elementary classrooms.

  44. Using the program bubbl.US would be a great tool for visual learners or even any student. It allows a student to plan out the steps they would like to do for a big project, important topic they may want to outline in an essay, create a visual check list to make sure that they meet all of the requirements asked by a teacher. It allows for something to be taken out, added in or rearranged. This image cold be projected on to smart board. They would feel as though they could have a hand in creating what a final outcome would be for a class project. Once this is done with help it would be a great tool that they could use on their own to map out other work as well.

  45. The benefits of using mind mapping are simple. It basically helps the students to see their ideas outside of their mind. Some students learn better when they can visualize their idea, possibly because it helps them to organize their own idea, as well as expand on others. You could use the bubble tool to help students see a story by using it on a smart board, or it could even be a great learning tool for the students to use on a computer in the computer lab.

  46. I really do like the program bubbl.us. It brings to life the kids' ideas and thoughts. You could use this in an elementary school classroom in many ways. You could have each student complete one before doing a project or a writing assignment to help the visual learners and even kids who are not as much of visual learners, to help them see their ideas, and become organized. Using this 'mind-map' could help the kids in a way that they can get all of their thoughts out in a organized and more fun way. Benefits are when they see this drawn out in bubbl, it will help them to reference to when they are writing their assignments, or doing a project. Even the younger students could use this program. Teachers can set up the bubbl for them if they think they will have difficulties setting it up. I think it is a great way to be organized and creative.

This could easily be used in an elementary school classroom when asking students to draw comparisons to persons or objects while implementing your lesson plans. A mind mapping tool such as this is beneficial for those visual learners because it shows where every idea ontop of idea are connected. The bubbl is neat and can be edited and re-edited and is an easy reference tool for students and teachers.

  48. I found that the bubbl map was a great way for me to actually go through and plan my ideas. I felt that this would also be beneficial for kids to plan their own projects. I also felt that mind mapping tools such as this would be a great way for visual learners to really grasp the concepts set before them, it will show them exactly where certain connections are made and also promote students thinking about new ideas to branch off of existing themes.
