Instructional Materials

Are videos good resources to use in a classroom? Could you foresee anyone (parents, administration, students, etc.) having a problem with you teaching with videos (online, self created, etc.)?

  2. I personally do not see any problem with in incorporating video into the class. After you continually pound away with lecture daily you will begin to loose your students, so I think a video would serve as a nice change up. the problem i see that would raise some eyebrows would be if videos just took over the entire class and replaced the functions of the teacher.

I believe videos are good tools to use in the classroom, however there needs to be a balance between videos, lectures, group work, individual work, etc. Like Dominique stated, if videos became the sole resource for teaching, it would raise some questions and students would most likely not have a full understanding of the key concepts of topics they are learning. Videos are good resources as a introductory tool because they immediately engage students into the topic in a friendly manner. Students can then understand lectures more easily because they watched an instructional video first. I can see some parents or administration having a problem with videos if they are always being used as the main source of education. Some parents and administration may feel children are being exposed to too much technology throughout the day. Presently, I think students use too much technology, especially since many kids watch at least an hour of tv day or use the computer. I would be more interested in students spending more time outside learning rather than watching more videos throughout the day.

  4. Videos are great resources within the classroom! They keep the students engaged and it also gives the students multiple ways to absorb the information. However, using a video every class may lose it's value. A teacher should incorporate different methods to teach different lessons i.e group work, lecturing, collaborative classroom work, etc. Incorporating videos into lessons is great because eventually after lecturing for long periods of time students get tunnel vision and zone out. At least I know I personally do. Parents and Teachers may have a problem with it to some extent because sometimes in a classroom students will say "oh we're watching a movie! I dont need to pay attention in class today!" So using a video for an entire lesson plan for a day may not be as helpful to the students. If a teacher must use a video they should only use it to prove a point or send a message that they otherwise would not be able to portray themselves.

  5. Videos are good tools to use within a lesson, they are not good tools to use INSTEAD of a lesson. Teachers who incorporate videos into their already well developed lessons are doing their students a service by creating a new perspective and allowing those who may not understand the exact phrasing used. Pictures and video are essential to some lessons (especially science lessons) and are simply decorative to others (such as history or literature). Teachers who overuse (or only use) videos may be labeled as lazy or ineffective by parents and colleagues. Also since children generally watch TV or videos for relaxation and entertainment overusing them may turn your classroom into a rumpus room with children (even older ones) talking and playing when they should be listening and learning.

  6. I believe that videos are a good tool to use in the classroom, but only in moderation. There needs to be a balance between the use of videos, textbook, group, and individual work. When I was in elementary school, we rarely used technology. The bulk of my learning came from the textbook, the teacher, and hands-on learning such as posters and writing on the chalkboard. Videos are a good source of information to provide concrete and visual examples for students. Using video solely, however, is detrimental to the child and to the learning abilities. Children today watch a lot of television and use a lot of technology. At school, we should be getting away from overusage. Videos are suitable for some lessons, but not all lessons.

    1. As a parent I try very hard to restrict my children's screen time. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children watch no more than 2 hours of TV a day. I've heard neuroscientists speak about the effect of blue light (light emitted from a monitor) on sleeping. If my students watched videos all day in school I would be concerned.

  7. Videos are good to use in the classroom as long as you don't make them too long. Too much television, as everyone knows, is bad for people's eyes. I'm sure that across the years of teaching, there will be some sort of problem a parent has with the teacher using videos. If it becomes too much of an issue the teacher will have to comply. There are always other ways to teach, though. Books have some great pictures and short captions. Another thing to do besides a video, if it is possible, is to bring in a guest speaker. It is always fun and exciting to know someone new is going to be entering the classroom!

  8. I believe that videos can be a great resource for students in the classroom. It keeps the students interest and it is different than you as the teacher to continue doing lectures during class time. The video is another way of learning the material being taught. I believe that outsiders might have an issue with video's posted online. I feel that it depends what you are teaching during class, and on the video. I feel that the video a teacher posts online should be used as a review of the class lecture that was taught during the day. The video I feel should not be new material being learned, the new material should be taught in the classroom. Administration but have some concerns of videos online, because it could be perceived as you the teacher are not doing your job in the class, could also be used as an easy way of teaching.

  9. Videos are great resources to use in the classroom, only if they are in addition to a lesson. Videos give students a visual of what they are learining as opposed to listening to someone lecture or read their text books. I can see some people getting upset over videos being played in the classroom just for the simple fact that they're videos. If they are told there educational and a tool to help implement the leesson, I don't see why anyone would oppose videos in the classroom.

  10. Videos are a great resource in the classroom as long as they are not the sole form of teaching used. Videos are a great way to further explain the current topic of discussion and allows students a visual way to learn rather than always copying notes. Not only does it allow a different form of teaching, but it may also provide an alternative way of explaining the topic which might benefit some of the students. I can see parents or certain administration having a problem with the use of videos, but as long as the teacher does not constantly rely on videos to teach the lesson, but uses them more as an aid, and if the videos are appropriate for the targeted age, then there should not be an issue of using videos to enhance the learning experience.

  11. I think using videos in classrooms today are a great/alternate way for children to learn. A lot of kids are visual learners now a days and understand material better when they are taught with visuals instead of just being "told". I can see parents having a problem with teachers using videos to teach if they use them all the time. Personally, I think teachers should split up how much they use videos to teach children because you don't want to take away the "one on one" time with your students and have them just listen to videos all the time. It is important to have an activity after the videos teachers show in the classroom in order to see if the children actually understood what was being taught in the video. If parents do have a problem you could always show the activity that their child did after the video was shown to prove that videos do have an effect on children learning.

  12. I truly believe that videos are great resources to use in the classroom. I don’t think anyone will have an issue with a teacher using a video in the classroom unless you show a video that is rated R or PG-13 in a classroom with students that are only in elementary school. That would cause some problems. I think videos are good with students because it is a little more interactive for students than some plain old lecture. Some of my favorite science lessons involved videos. The most famous, of course, being Bill Nye The Science Guy. I wouldn’t use a video for every lesson, but sometimes, it is just perfect for what you’re teaching. I think when the students are older it is harder to show videos in class because students, especially in high school, find videos as an “easy” class where they can just sit and relax without paying much attention to the content. For younger children, though, it is a good way to get them thinking. My mother uses videos in her Special Education classroom all the time. The students love the videos and the content seems to stick better. For them, it is a fun way to learn and they actually really enjoy watching the videos. It’s easier for them to pay attention to a video rather than a teacher.

  13. Using technology and videos is very alternative way to present into the classroom as a technique for children to learn. It is very challenging to use videos for presenting a lesson in the classroom because the teacher have to find good information to present the lesson and make sure that the student will understand the lesson presented with a video. Also it is important for the teacher to spread the video lesson into group activities with students, make them using ideas, and compare their ideas with the other classmates. Regarding to the parents I can say that they don’t really agree on this video thing, I say this because of my own experience, I had a class once that was based on videos showing examples how to do things like to brush your teeth, tie a shoe, wash your hands, etc, and my mother was like “why are you going to school to watch tv and videos I pay money for your school and the teacher does nothing for you but shows you video” my mother had no idea that for that video the teacher have to work hard and make it very good for her students and use very careful and appropriate language for the audience. in my opinion the viedo is better because the student pays attention to the video and makes them listen and hear very careful what is the video about.

  14. Yes, I personally think videos are a good resource to have in the classroom. There are many reasons why. All children like videos. Videos can be interactive as well as draw the childrens attention. The tone in a video can vary rather than a monotone voice. As long as the videos are shorter and to the point, the video will capture the childrens attention and they are more apt to learn something new, rather than listening to the teacher stand in front of the classroom lecturing. Some parents may have an issue with educators using videos in the classroom. If they saw that the videos aer educational and they understand that the children will be intrigued and learning, I believe they will better understand the resoning behind using videos and other means of technology in the classroom. I would think that administrators would embrace the use of technology in the classroom. Students whom may not have access to a computer or whom have very little experience with a computer may nit like the idea, however, as they are exposed to it, I think they will come to enjoy it.

  15. Using videos as a way of teaching and communicating with students in a classroom is a great idea. Videos give a great alternative to teaching from the books, and it is a new and modern way of teaching these modern students.Videos and the use of technology allow students to keep up with this technology enhancing world. Videos also give teachers a way to keep up with technology and interact with the students in a modern way. I do however believe that some parents may have a problem with videos being used in the classroom. Parents can be protective of what their children watch, many parents can be "to the books" and might be hesitant to have technology in the classroom. Many parents are protective of what their children watch, so parents will have to put their trust in the teachers choice in the videos the students watch. Administrators on the other hand, in my opinion will be very open to the idea of using videos in the classroom. Administrators want students to learn in the best way possible, especially for students who are not typically used to using technology in their everyday life. Overall I believe that videos are useful for students in the classroom, and parents and administrators will be open to the idea of videos in the classroom.

  16. Videos are a great way to to help anyone learn about subjects through seeing and visually grasping a concept as opposed to just speaking about it. Children learn in different ways and so I think that this would be a beneficial aid to teaching in the classroom. There are a lot of educational videos out there that help children learn about different subjects as well as helping define words or portray situations that would be better of seen than read or heard. Teachers can choose parts of videos or even creat their own to incorporate it into their lesson plan. As long as the teacher is using a video that is educational and age appropriate, I don't think parents would have a problem with it. If their was some concern with what videos children are being shown in the classroom then the parents involvement with what the child is learning and the parent teacher relationship is important. Like anything children watch on TV, the parent can most likely just go over what the children have watched in school, like they would when they are guiding their children as they watch regular television.

  17. In my opinion I believe videos are a great resource to use in classrooms. I think it is one of the most effective ways to get children to pay attention and actually understand what they are learning. If you make videos or movies with information they are already knowledgeable on and add more and more things to it, then the learning process would be must faster for them. In addition, videos grab kids attention rather than listening to a etcher standing in front of the classroom. I think most parents strongly agree with teaching their children with videos. On the other hand, I think there may be other parents who do not believe in videos. For example, there are parents who do not want all of their children to count on videos and technology to learn new things. I know some parents from when i was in high school, argued they wanted their children to be challenged to think, not to just watch videos. I feel that everyone has their own opinions on weather or not teachers should use videos in lessons or not, but i personally think that they help children in the long run to learn their lessons.

  18. I think videos are great tools to use in the classroom. Children sometimes need a different way of teaching so it keeps them interested. Videos maybe able to explain things better than teaching sometimes. As long as the video is age apporpiate and educational videos can be great teaching tools. Parents might sometimes be skeptical of using videos as teaching because they might not see it as a good learning technique or they may feel the teacher is not doing his or her job. It may be a good idea to adress this during parents night on explaining how technology can be very beneficial to students learning.

  19. I think that videos are a very good tool to use in the classroom. Sometimes, a teacher cannot convey an idea clearly to students, and videos are a good and fun way for students to learn new information. If students still don't understand the subject at hand, they can rewind, pause or re watch the video as many times as they need to in order to understand it. I think that parents and adults would not have a problem with using videos as educational tools because videos have been used in the classrooms for years, and they have been a good way for the same educational information that the teacher is teaching to get across in a different way.

  20. I think that Videos are a useful tool within the classroom. However I think that the overuse of videos can be bad because students need to learn from something other than a video every day. If a video is used as an introduction to a unit or even as an example at the end of a unit, then it seems to be a good helpful tool. Each student learns differently, some students learn with hands on experience, others learn better visually and some work better when there are things to be written out. I think that parents and principals might have a problem with videos within the classroom. There is a lot of different beliefs on how people feel about videos. I think that if I were to show a video I would make sure it was not extremely long, I would make sure it was educational and at most if my principal would like to see the video ahead of time to make sure it is appropriate I will have no problem showing it to them. I think that short educational videos are really not a bad thing because they do really help engage students. However parents do get frustrated when they find out their child watched a video in school. They say they send their kids to school to learn and to not watch movies all day. What parents don’t know is that videos really do help students learn. Sometimes students get sick of a teacher standing at the front of the class teaching them every single lesson the same exact way every time. When something is switched up they generally get excited and pay more attention to the video. I do believe that student/teacher interaction is extremely important in schools but sometimes a video can do that same job. Switching the way we teach every once in a while helps children. The same old routine will begin to bore them, gaining their attention, their focus and their eagerness to learn is essential.

  22. If used properly, videos can be effective learning tools to utilize in the classroom. Videos should not replace teaching; however, they can be used to supplement lessons. If done in this manner, I do not believe there will be adverse opinions regarding this teaching approach. With video as one component in a thoughtful lesson plan, they can be utilized to take students on impossible field trips and illustrate complex, abstract concepts in a relatively short time period. The use of video also addresses the learning styles and needs of visual and auditory learners. For these reasons, all educators should learn how to properly use videos in the classroom to enhance students’ learning. However, educators must keep in mind that there must be a balance in teaching tools that are utilized. In order to address all students’ needs multiple methods must be available. Videos may assist certain student while proving to be inadequate for others. Therefore, a variety of teaching techniques must be employed on a daily basis, thereby, ensuring the success of all students.

  23. I feel as if in this generation of parents it wouldn’t be that large of an issue. When you get into the topics of movies and controversial topics it may be a concern, in which permission slips and alternate activities must be planned however this tends to be the case in the middle and high school levels not so much the elementary level. I believe videos are a good use as long as they are appropriate for the age level and the content is accurate and informative. When making your own videos and movies it is easy to make sure this is so and thus becomes and excellent resource as you can format the video to your students needs. When using online videos you have to be careful in the selection process with what would be appropriate to use, however using outside resources can give you more creative ideas and can be done better than what you had even thought of in your mind. I can foresee administration asking to approve any online videos you use which shouldn’t be an issue as an elementary school teacher, because to begin with you should only be choosing videos that are completely age, content and topic appropriate. In summary I believe videos weather online or self created are a great resource.

  24. Videos are a good resource to use in the classroom because sometimes they can provde a different and entertaining way to introduce a new lesson. They also can be used to show things that take a lot of time to do or explain something better than you might be able to as a teacher. However I think they should be an accent but not the whole focus. If you use videos as a basis for the lesson you're lacking any real student/student and student/teacher involvement. Some parents and other colleauges may have a problem with videos. Parents might not think its appropriate that that a teacher records themselves (or their kids) during a lesson and posts it on the internet. They also might not approve of the teacher using that as instructional material (as opposed to being hands on involved with their kids.) As for other teachers they might think its the easy way out of teaching or feel that because they do not use videos, that other teachers should not use them either.

  25. I think that videos are good tools to use in the classroom as long as they're used in moderation. I think if videos are used too much then the students begin to tune them out and they become ineffective. On the other side, videos can be very informative to students. Often the visuals of the video help students with difficult concepts along with keeping students engaged in the materials. I do think there could be some problems by using videos, if administration or parents think you are using them instead of teaching yourself, or maybe they think the videos don't give students a way to be engaged in the lesson. But again, I think if videos are used in moderation, there could be a lot of benefits to using videos in lesson plans.

  26. I think videos are a great tool to use in the classroom. Videos can teach, show, and interact with students the way that other forms of teaching cannot. In the reading, it mentioned that just pointing to a city on a map is not enough to help students visualize what the city actually looks like. We can use google maps to take a virtual tour of the city. Some parents may have a problem with using videos in the classroom. In order to make the parents feel more at ease, the teacher can send out a letter explaining why technology is so vital to the classroom.

Videos are able to provide more detailed lessons by using many examples, pictures, and audio. I cannot foresee parents, administration, or students having a problem with using videos another an alternative learning lesson. I do not believe that there is anything negative that can come from using a video to teach a lesson, whether it is online or self created. It is just another way of getting the message across.

  28. I do believe that it is a good idea for teachers to use videos in their classrooms as a learning guide for the students. They are very useful in breaking down a process and making it easier to understand. The only way I see this being an issue is if that is the only resource the teacher is using to teach the lesson at hand. The teacher must also understand that not everyone is at a high level of understanding when it comes to technology. The teacher should not assign homework that involves a lot of that use. I believe some is alright to add to the stuff that is brought home by students, but not to the point were they are feeling over whelmed. But the teacher themselves should be able to incorporate this piece of technology into a lesson plan in the classroom.

I think that videos are a useful tool in the classroom because they give students a switch from the normal routine of lecture-based learning, they sometimes explain material better than the teacher can, and they also help students who need a vusial in order to grasp certain concepts. One thing I could see parents having an issue with teaching through videos is if that was the entire lesson, only showing a video means that the teacher isn't fully doing his/her job. If the video was created by the teacher, parents may question its accuracy but it shouldn't be of great concern because as a teacher you have a responsibility to check those sort of things.

  30. Videos are great resources to use in the classroom they provide the teacher a way to paint vivid picture so the students get a different perspective. Videos show different meaning, unlike a still picture; a video show clip that will explain with audio and images. Some parents may be skeptical about teaching with videos; videos may show scenes that are against some parents teaching or morals. They may think it is not suited for classroom settings.

  31. Videos are a really helpful tool in the classroom because they provide the students a way to learn outside from your typicall day to day lecture. Some students learn better when they see a video or movie as opposed to text books. One possible issue with teaching through videos is that if a teacher constintly teaches through video then he or she isnt really doing their job. If a teacher balances videos, lectures, and other activities into their lesson plans then that would be the best choice.

  32. I think that videos can absolutely be a helpful in the classroom. I think it provides a new and exciting way for students to learn. However, I do understand that parents have hesitations when it comes to videos. I teach Pre-Kindergarten and even before their kids are in public schools, parents may have a problem with videos even if they are educational. One way to ease parents' worry is by sharing with them ahead of time what the video is and why it is being watched as part of this class. Videos certainly cannot be used every day or as the only way of teaching, but I definitely think they can serve as a very useful tool in teaching.

Videos can be an important supplemental part to the lesson plan especially when used to introduce material or for re-emphasis at the conclusion.While the instructor should play the largest part in the process videos can be used in concert with his/or her presentation. By pausing the video to ask questions of the students or to go over the significance of a particular point that was mentioned the instructor is able to control the focus of the students.Too often teachers feel they are at the mercy of the video and assume they have to let it play out in its entirety before having any discussion.If parents are under the impression that video is just a substitute for television then they need to be re-educated in their thinking. Sending home a summary for instance of a proposed lesson plan can highlight the video role as a supplement to the lesson and not as being the whole lesson.

  34. I firmly believe videos to be an asset to the classroom for many reasons. One key reason is there are many students such as myself who are visual learners. Some students can't get by without visual materials, therefore it's always important to keep all forms of material readily available. As for parents or whomever being offended by the material presented in a video; as long as the parents have a general idea of what their children are being subjected to, there should be no issues. Things that could be considered offensive are religious content, sexual content (as our local newspapers are showing as of recent), and political content due to those voters who have an extreme bias on occasion about who the best candidate may be running for office. As I've personally witnessed in the school systems, you can't win them all, but you can sure try.

  35. Videos are great resources to use in the classroom. Not only do videos grab all the student's senses which leads to more memory, but they also can put what your trying to say into better words, or an easier way to understand. Videos can also make lessons more interesting and fun for the students and be less time consuming. If I used a video for every lesson I could see parents possibly having a problem with that because if it's the child that tells them they watch videos all the time, they may assume it's movies and I'm being lazy by not teaching a lesson without a video. I think some parents may also be against videos or computers because they see it as their child just being in front of "another screen". I think school administrators and other teachers especially newer ones, have a better understanding for what technology can do for students and classrooms and how much it helps, but hopefully in the future at either through a newsletter, email to the parents or through meetings with the parents I could mention what kind of technology we use in our classroom and what it does for the kids. I believe in most schools to watch certain videos, (not self-made) there has to be parent consent anyways. So by making sure everyone understands how my classroom is and what my teaching style is involving technology, I can make videos fit in and work even better.

  36. Incorporating videos into the classroom is a great way to switch up lesson plans! Some things are better learned through watching especially for students who are visual learners. Videos allow teachers to make connections to movies, commercials, etc that will help students remember the lesson better. With elementary students it is important to switch up your lesson plans to keep them interested but you also want to keep their attention. Including videos in your lessons will keep the students excited while learning the material. However, i do think some teachers just pop a movie in without really making a connection to the lesson. I think there is appropriate ways of incorporating videos into education. For myself, i am a visual learned and i love being able to make connections with videos because after completing a film it is easier to remember the information you were learning during the lesson. Videos are great resources for in the classroom because it allows teachers to get their message across to students without a boring lecture. Switching up lesson plans is important because students need to remain engaged in activities. Including videos in your lessons will get the children excited and allow them to learn the information in a different way! I am a strong believer in incorporating technology into the classroom and i think including videos is a great start! Learning is everywhere and it is important to stress that to students. For example, students can connect lessons to a television show they are watching or a movie they have seen. Allowing students to watch videos will allow them to see how education is everywhere and will show them how important it is to connect the lessons to real life. Teaching through media literacy is very effective in todays society because technology is booming. To keep up with students and technology it is important to incorporate it into your lessons such as videos. I can see how people such as parents and administrators would have a problem with teachers using videos as an educational tool because alot of people are still old fashioned and believe in a lecture and textbook way of teaching which is still effective but in todays society it is important to keep up with the demands of technology and the students interests.

  37. I think videos are great resources to use in the classroom. Personally, when I was in elementary school I loved when my teachers would show us Bill Nye or Schoolhouse Rock videos. They not only helped me understand the material better, but were interesting and made learning the topic fun. I do think that some parents or faculty could be upset with using videos as a teaching resource because they might think it is either inappropriate or not educational. I would run it by administration and the parents before I showed my students a certain video but I think using a short video to reinforce new material would be extremely effective. Of course the use of videos needs to be in moderation and only to visually help students understand the lesson better, not in place of teaching a lesson. With new technological advances becoming more apparent in classroom's I don't think the use of short videos whether they be self made or found online, will be uncommon. I also think the use of videos outside of the classroom are extremely successful. I've had classes in the past that had videos to clarify new lessons or to help you with the homework. Students are then able to watch the videos whenever or however many times they need to as well as able to pause, fastforward, and rewind the lesson if necessary. Whether it be outside or inside the classroom, I think educational videos are a great resource for students.

  38. I believe that video's are a great tool to use in the classroom. I know first hand I get very excited when I see a video being popped into the player. I feel like it makes class go by quicker other then hearing a boring lecture. I can forsee parents or teachers having a problem with using them because they feel it demeans their teaching but I believe incorporating a good mix of lecture and video helps the student become more successful in the class.

  39. I think videos are excellent tools in a classroom. First and for most it gets the students attention and they enjoy listening and watching something visual oppossed to simply listening to a teachers lesson. Videos offer great tools to help bring a new light to a subject. They can ask questions, show images, be engaging and the students enjoy learning in different ways. I think videos should be used to convey certain subjects because there are sometimes people such as teachers with doctorates who can explain something better than I would be able too. With the world of technology we live in now and the many advances happening to our classrooms, I don't think adults would have a problem with showing a small clip. However, it is the teachers responsibility to manage the time they spend showing videos and making sure the students are actually gaining some knowledge from the video. A good way to check their learning is by asking questions or creating a worksheet to go alone with the video that they must complete. Videos overall, offer a great learning experience and can really help capture students attention.

  40. I believe that videos have a place in the classroom. Only a small place though. They should be used as an additional tool to help emphasize a lesson. They are not as effective when they are in consentant use. I also have a problem with the teacher that just throws on a video and thats the extent of the lesson. I come from the generation when they would roll in the film projector and show a movie on a large white wall. I have to admit it was great. But it happened so infrequently that it had an enormous impression about the entire class. I realize that we are living in different times, and I whole heartedly embrace technology, but it should not be the only tool used in the classroom.

  41. I think that using videos for teachers lesson plans is very smart. I also think that it can be very beneficial especially this day in age when technology use for students is on the rise. I think this will help get a lot more students attention and will help them have excitement to learn and watch new videos. The only way I think parents could get upset about the use of the videos is if the students have to go home and some how access a new video from the teacher. I think this will put a lot of pressure and responsibility on the parents to make sure theres never a problem with the computer or internet in their house, I think the use of videos should just be used in the classroom and not out of it other than that it could help a lot of students learn in a more beneficial way.

  42. I think that in many instances, videos are a very useful resource in the classroom. They sometimes explain a topic better than a teacher can and in a shorter amount of time. Videos also provide a visual aid for students and can keep them more interested in the materials being presented. However, this does not necessarily mean that all lessons should be taught using videos. It also is possible that some parents or administrators could have a problem with video usage. They may be concerned about too many videos being shown, which could really interfere with the learning process. Too much of anything isn't good, and this goes for videos as well. If overused, they could lose their appeal anyways. Some parents may also be concerned that the teacher is just using videos as a way to give themselves a break. I think the teacher might have to explain their methods and ideas about videos in the beginning of the year to make sure there are no major complaints from parents or administrators. Other than that, I think that videos are extremely beneficial in certain situations.

  43. I believe videos can be very effective especially in situations where the video can virtually take the students somewhere they can't go as a class. For example, if the teacher needed to inform the class about Georgia, it would be really easy to show them videos taken, or pictures of the state so they could visualize it the best they could. Also, when it comes to things like the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly it is much faster and much more clear to students what changes take place in the cycle if shown by a video rather than an explanation. It is also much faster than watching and waiting for weeks first hand. Videos may teach quicker, clearer, and over all more affectively than other ways, and may also be more appealing to students. In videos you may include catchy music, and visual pictures to increase the attention span of your students. I can see where administrators or parents may have problems with videos though, because some do not enjoy the use of technology more than what's neccesary, especially in young kids. Looking at a screen could be a problem. Many parents limit their kids to a certain amount of tv time a day or weeek, and this may interfere somewhat. Also, administators may feel it is not hands-on enough to show videos rather than actually see it in the classroom, or participate in the activity with eachother. It could lose the focus of some students and not allow them to learn as well because some students are more hands-on than others and this could upset both parents and administrators.

  44. i think that having videos in a new way of learning that is having an uprise in the classrooms. In my opinion, it is a good way to expand a lesson in a fun and different way to learn. When it comes to taking videos home to watch, i think that is has some more negatives then positives. For example, some families may not have enough money to have the technology needed to watch a move properly. I think videos should stay in the classroom as a learning technique.

  45. I think videos are a good educational resource when it is used properly. I think a big concern for administration and parents would be the appropriateness of the videos. Some videos are not age appropriate for the younger ages. Videos are a visual and fun way for students to get a grasp on a subject. I am a fan of using a video only if it is educationally beneficial. If the students aren't going to get anything out of the video then using it as a space filler isn't a good use of video. Videos should be used in the classroom as a resource to the teacher to benefit the students.

I think this is because students are intrigued by videos and they are likely to pay more close attention to the video lesson versus a text book lesson. Videos are a great way to promote class discussions, questions, and future research. Some parents or administrators may have a problem with teachers showing videos in the classroom because I think a lot of adults disagree with large amount of technology in the classroom, only because they don't understand how useful and effective it can be in enhancing the learning experience. I feel like everyone should understand how helpful these educational videos can be, especially for those students who learn better visually.

  47. Are videos good resources to use in a classroom? Could you foresee anyone (parents, administration, students, etc.) having a problem with you teaching with videos (online, self created, etc.)?

    I believe videos are a great resource in the classroom. Day after day of the same old boring lectures and bookwork really can distance a class from it's learning, so videos are a great way to get them more involved. The only issue I can foresee parents or administration having with this addition to learning may be that children get enough television show time at home as it is. I believe there are so many more positive aspects to incorporating videos into learning though that this argument wouldn't even have a chance to hold. They are first off teaching important matter in a way that is more common and realistic to an average child today, videos also have the ability to be reviewed again and again, and even sharable for other classrooms usage.

  48. I think videos are a great resource to use in the classroom because they are attention grabbing and help visual and auditory learners. Listening to the same thing everyday can become extremely uninteresting to children, and eventually cause them to lose interest in the subject. Personally when I was younger I was thrilled to hear that we were watching a movie in class. I can foresee an issue with the use of videos, because they should only be used in moderation. Many adults are concerned about the amount of technology children use, however; I believe as long as it is only used every now and then it will only help the children to learn the subject.

  49. I think videos can be a great teaching tool - engaging, and allowing for condensation of the material into short time span. Also, familiarity of this form may help students approach new with more confidence. Despite these advantages, I can see how parents or school principals may be skeptical of this method of teaching. Videos are primarily the source of entertainment not education in our daily lives, they are part of popular culture and may be seen as "not serious enough" to be an educational tool, particularly in a classroom. Also, because the video is something students will most likely remember, when asked by the parent what did you do at school today, they'll reply "we watched video", and after few conversations like that parents' idea of the classroom will be that of movie theater and popcorn. I think those (and other) misconceptions and worries can be worked out through teacher - parent - school administration communication. Teacher could provide parents with short outline of variety of methods used in a classroom, and perhaps list some of the classroom activities in the newsletter periodically send to parents. Concluding, I think videos can be great resource in classroom, diversifying learning experience, and helping teachers reach broader audiences.

    1. Many great comments Aleksandra. Another thing that no one is mentioning is that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children watch no more than 2 hours of screens a day. At my house I closely monitor this. There are days when its raining and my kids come home and watch TV and if I am busy it may be for 2 hours. If they also watched 2 hours in school they are now exceeding their limit. So, in that case I would be upset.

  50. I think that videos are indeed a great resource for the classroom. As a teacher you can bring in many different perspectives to get your classroom thinking. Many students learn better visually and audially so many videos can help those types of learners, as well as it being entertaining and invovling for the other students. I don't believe that parents would have a problem unless you were to mandate a video for an assignment. Some students may not have the opportunity to utilize that resource due to family problems such financial.

  51. Using a video in the classroom would be very helpful, it may be used to review on a certain subject or shows a different point of view than the teacher would be able to explain. Sometimes a lesson plan be better explain using a pictures and experiment that may not have been able to be done in the classroom. Kids get excited because they get to see a video in class they are able to relate it to their own lives after seeing something visual like a video. If you use the same character to help explain an lesson like Moby and Tim in the BrainPop videos. Moby and Tim are able to show visuals and other little tidbits that you would not be able to easily and efficiently in a classroom. Also with a video it is something that can be stopped, pause, fast forward or rewind if need be. It also can be accessed form home to, if a student feels that he/she is having trouble with something I can offer at home help with some of the pressure taking off of I need to learn this as fast as the other student in order to be able to keep up. There are many advantages of using videos in class. However I could foresee a parent having an issue if a teacher was using a video in place of them teaching for every subject. Then I could see a parenting even administration in a school having an issue with that. A video is made to enhance learning not to take the place of a teacher.

  52. I believe that videos are a great resource for teaching in a classroom, as long as it is being used in an appropriate way. I should not take center stage for all lessons. The teacher should not depend heavily on videos to teach and the students should not depend on videos to learn. It should be used to enhance the lesson with visuals and audio affects that may help students that best learn with those tools. They can also help further explain something in a different way. Sometimes repetition helps when you hear something slightly different the second or third time. One benefit to videos is time. For example, when learning about plant growth or how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly a video gives us the option to fast forward. Or slow things down when breaking down a process, such as cell division, which happens fast. Videos can be a helpful tool in these types of lessons and many others. But too much of a good thing can be a bad thing; as long as it is being used efficiently and it helps, not hinders, students' education videos are welcome to a classroom.
